Marion’s Kitchen Japanese Teriyaki recipes

Teriyaki could perhaps be Japan’s greatest culinary gift to the world. With layers of flavour over a distinctive soy base, this marinade is just made for barbecues and simple skewers.

What is Japanese teriyaki sauce made of?

Japanese teriyaki sauce is made of four super simple ingredients. It’s a combination of soy sauce, sugar, sake and mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine).

The authentic version contains only these four ingredients, but some Westernised versions of the sticky marinade often contain garlic, ginger and oftentimes honey for added flavour.

Is teriyaki traditionally Japanese?

Yes! Teriyaki sauce is a traditional Japanese marinade, and it has roots dating back to the 17th Century. The marinade was traditionally used for fish in Japan, but it is now used with a huge variety of meats and veggies.
