Thai street food dishes, made with love. And made in a rice cooker.

They might not be traditional, but they sure are tasty.

Thai street food dishes, made with love. And made in a rice cooker.

When I go to Thailand, there’s nothing better than enjoying as much of the street food as I possibly can. All those flavours, smells and sounds make it as much about the experience as the taste itself – it totally transports me back to the time I was living in Bangkok and surrounded by the wondrous hustle and bustle on the daily. But how to cook street food at home… in Australia? It can often seem somewhat daunting. I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen and, my friend, I think I’ve finally cracked it. I’ve put together recipes for three of my favourite Thai street food dishes and, in an exciting turn of events, I’ve made them all in the ONE APPLIANCE. Hold on to your napkins: we’re making Thai street food… in a rice cooker.

THAI rice cooker recipes?

Yep, you heard me. I’m using the one kitchen benchtop appliance to dish up three plates of divineness. Because you know what? These days, appliances wear multiple hats, which is especially true of the Panasonic rice cooker I chose to rustle these recipes up in. It’s got various functions that go beyond just a bowl of steamed rice (even though there’s zilch wrong with that!). Let’s go.

Rice Cooker BBQ Pork Steamed Buns

Rice Cooker BBQ Pork Steamed Buns

Fluffy, porky, steamed BBQ pork buns are a mainstay of Asian street food. But you know what? I actually think that when you make them at home from scratch and stuff them with heaps of char siu pork. The recipe for this one starts off with the dough, and for this I’m using a breadmaker (another appliance I have serious time for) just to make life easier (because, why not?), but you could totally knead by hand.

Rice Cooker Thai Chicken Noodle Soup

Rice Cooker Thai Chicken Noodle Soup

The foundation of an ultra-comforting chicken noodle soup is the broth – it’s the absolute backbone of the dish. This resulting recipe is so many things all at once, too. It’s an energy reviver on a cold, wintery day. The pep in your step when things are ‘meh’. A hug in a bowl to show a loved one you care. And, at its simplest, a delicious meal for any day of the week.

Rice Cooker Mango Sticky Rice

Rice Cooker Mango Sticky Rice

It’s Thailand’s most famous dessert full stop, not just street food dessert! And wow, it truly is happiness on a plate. Fresh and sunny mango, creamy and sweet sticky rice, and then a smooth and heavenly sauce to tie it all together. Thai rice cooker recipes don’t get much better, if you ask me.
